Karachi Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan and capital of the Province of Sindh. The city has five populous districts to administer. It is populated with over 10 million and continues to grow at the rate of 6% per annum. Population of Karachi is heterogeneous in nature. It is constituted of the ethnic groups from the four provinces of the country plus the Muslims who migrated from India at the time of partition, 1947. Majority of the population is Muslim that constitutes 96% of the total population. However, a small percentage of population is Christian, Parsies, and Hindus etc. Karachi is thus a conglomeration of various ethnic and religious groups, a cosmopolitan city, and may be termed as the melting pot of all cultures. Since the creation of Pakistan, 1947, Karachi's demographics composition has been changing, ever, fast. Immediately, after independence, Karachi housed the large groups of people coming from different parts of India. Karachi soon became the main port, industrial base, and trade & commerce center of Pakistan. Karachi's moderate climate and promised livelihood nurtured the overwhelming influx of rural population from all over the country. Over the last three decades, Karachi has become a miniature Pakistan. Karachi has 37 large organizations. These include Karachi Development Authority, Karachi Port Trust, Karachi Electric Supply Corporation, Defense Housing Authority, Cantonment Board, Karachi Gas Co, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, and the 5 District Municipal Corporations, and etc. Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is the single largest Local Government institution in the country along-with five District Municipal Corporations, viz., D.M.C. (WEST), D.M.C. (EAST), D.M.C. (SOUTH), D.M.C. (CENTRAL), D.M.C. (MALIR). |
