After division of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on 4-7-1996, five District Municipal Corporations were created.

The jurisdiction of District Municipal Corporation West is spread over 81 square kilometers. The population of District West is 2 million. There are 34 Karachi Panchayats (K.P) in the District West.

There are 4500 employees in District Municipal Corporation West, which includes officers and officials.

In addition to District Municipal Corporation West, SITE limited and Karachi Development Authority are also responsible for municipal functions in their respective areas. Only 10% of municipal limits are planned area. Rest is either Katchi Abadies or regularized Katchi Abadies.
